Yesterday afternoon I volunteered with The Felix Project, a London charity that rescues surplus food and redistributes it to people who need it. It was a good afternoon.

The work was pretty simple. We put lids on food containers, labelled them up, and fluffed rice. There was music on which made it a nice atmosphere. The team on site were really supportive, making sure everyone knew what they were doing and felt safe before getting stuck in. We cleaned down at the end.

Packing food containers at the Felix Project kitchen
Suited up and ready to go. Hi-vis, hairnet, apron, the works.

That kitchen puts out 3,000 to 5,000 meals a day, which is pretty impressive. They collect food from supermarkets, restaurants and suppliers that would otherwise be thrown away and get it to people who need it.

After the shift a few of us went to the pub for a catch up before heading home, which was a nice end to the day.

Advancing Analytics gives us two charity days a year to use however we like. I hadn’t really used them before but I will be making sure I use both going forward. It’s a great perk and removes the main excuse not to do this kind of thing.
